Both dependencies were merged, so I rebased and did some testing in order to get this out of draft status. Check MR description for the tests that I ran.
The MR seems to work as intended on my system; however, for some reason the ddcutil connection event callback seems to have stopped working for me at some point. Updating to the current development version of ddcutil makes things work as intended, which is good news, but also bad news because people don't generally have it available yet. Hopefully a new version will be released soon enough, the last release was from February 2024 and ddcutil has seen lots of changes since.
Also it appears I've got myself a build error in the FreeBSD build. Let's try to get that building too.
